Nurse practitioners can work in many areas. Nurse practitioners are not funded by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) . When working independently, there is a fee-for-service fee because nurse practitioners cannot bill OHIP for the work that he/she does. Below are a list of fees. Nurse practitioners do not work with a "one issue per visit" policy because this is a fee-for-service; however, patients are billed for the time and expertise. When you support an independent practice, you are supporting a small business.
The benefit for having a healthcare provider that is fee-for-service means you can often see the provider in a more timely manner without having the limitation of one concern per visit.
First initial visit is charged for 45 minutes, 30 minutes of that is with you, and 15 is for the NP to review your file/medications/ notes etc, and any subsequent visit is 30 minutes. If the visit requires longer than the 30 minutes, you will be charged per the half hour.
All laboratory tests and diagnostics are covered under Ontario Health Insurance Plan if you have OHIP. You are billed for the services and time.
