A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with advanced university education who provides personalized quality health care to clients. Nurse practitioners are registered nurses in the extended class who have met additional education, experience, and exam requirements set by the College. They are authorized to diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests. NPs can also prescribe medications and other treatments. These clinicians blend clinical expertise in diagnosing and treating health conditions with an added emphasis on disease prevention and health management. NPs bring a comprehensive perspective and personal touch to health care.
Ontario NPs provide a range of healthcare services to individuals, families, and communities in a variety of settings including hospitals and communities. NPs can work in partnership with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals such as social workers, midwives, and pharmacists to keep you and your family well.
What can a nurse practitioner do? NPs can assess, diagnose, treat, and monitor a wide range of health conditions using evidence based approach to their practice. They consult and collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to meet the needs of the client. Chronic disease management, health promotion, and illness prevention is the hallmark of NP practice.
Below is a list that is not exhaustive of what NPs are authorized to perform to do:
Julia earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 2010, and completed her primary healthcare nurse practitioner program in 2018 from Western University in London, Ontario. She also completed her Diploma in Tropical Nursing (infectious diseases such as HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis) in 2017 in Liverpool, UK.
Julia has a passion for nutrition, fitness, and well-being and is currently finishing her program of holistic nutrition focusing on root cause of disease.
Julia's nursing practice started in paediatrics for five years both in the hospital and the community. She also worked on a trauma unit for nearly ten years. Her passion for helping clients focus on health and well being transitioned her to becoming a nurse practitioner with a focus on primary care. This led to working with clients who needed assistance with treating health conditions like hepatitis C, diabetes, hypertension and obesity.
It was not until she struggled with infertility and finally had her son, where she learned that she loved independent practice to have the flexibility she craved to be at home with her son.
Julia noticed there was a large gap in care from the moment she delivered her son until her six week follow up appointment. She had several health appointments leading up to delivery with only one follow up after birth.
